The George Washington University (GW) Cancer Center gratefully acknowledges the bequest from the Center for Advancing Health (CFAH) that made Prepared Patient® possible. This bequest honors the legacy of Dr. Jessie Gruman, President and Founder of CFAH, by sustaining her life’s work to help patients make informed choices about their health and health care and to ensure the patient voice remains prominent in health care policymaking. CFAH, a nonpartisan, Washington-based research institute, was founded by Dr. Gruman in 1992. As president, Dr. Gruman drew on her own experience of treatment for five cancer diagnoses, interviews with patients and caregivers, surveys and peer-reviewed research to describe and advocate for policies and practices to overcome the challenges people face in finding good care and getting the most from it.

The GW Cancer Center’s Prepared Patient® initiative is a direct outgrowth of Jessie Gruman’s visionary leadership at the Center for Advancing Health. On this site, you can find resources previously on the CFAH site along with new information. This site honors the legacy of Jessie. Listen to Jessie in her own words about why your engagement in your care is important.
